Keep Going

Well friends, I didn't think I'd come crawling back to my blog with the attitude I've had this past week...Let me just say that I haven't felt this down in a long time. In fact, despite being on a few of the hardest med school rotations for the past 4 months, I have been really upbeat - busy of course, but happy about life in general. I don't really know what has changed in the past 3 weeks or so. I'd have to say that it was probably a combination of the cloudy Chicago weather, stressing about my upcoming career choices, and just general worry about some aspects of my personal life.

To top it off, this past weekend my dog Indie ended up in the vet emergency room. This past Saturday he started having some GI issues that we thought would resolve. But by Sunday they had only gotten worse, he wasn't eating or drinking, and he started shaking. My dad and I rushed him to the emergency vet and he was diagnosed with canine hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE). That's probably more than you wanted to know, but anyway, he had to stay overnight for IV fluids and antibiotics. We picked him up on Monday morning, he slept all day, and thankfully by yesterday afternoon he looking like his old self. (By the way, we did make him some homemade chicken broth to rehydrate on). I'm so thankful that he got better & that nothing serious happened. (The main complications of canine HGE are renal failure and death -- so, so scary!)

My little trooper. He had part of his paw shaved so they could place the IV.

My current rotation is one of the easier ones, but it isn't really my thing. Less interest combined with a SLOW attending (the MD that leads our team of residents & students) is making this week much more trying. I've also started to be bothered by the gunner personality a few of my classmates have adopted. My saving grace has been my residents this month - they are kind, funny and great teachers - all in all, awesome people.

Still though, a cloud of depression has been lingering over me. I'm trying to focus on the positive and be thankful for all the blessings in my life - namely my friends and family. I took tonight off to bake my team some chocolate chip cookies, update my iPod, and of course, finally get back into blogging. Holiday break is only one week away and I know I can make it there. The quote below is by Churchill and is one of my favorites...it's been a good little mantra to keep in mind during these rough times.
